Biographical note
Abie Longstaff (Author)Abie Longstaff is the eldest of six children and grew up in Australia, Hong Kong and France. She knows all about squabbling, chaos and bossing younger sisters around. So she logically began her career as a barrister. She started writing when her children were born. Her favourite childhood books were Hating Alison Ashley, A Little Princess, Maura's Angel and The Black Stallion and she sneakily reads them again sometimes. Abie lives in north London with her family and a very pesky cocker spaniel who chews the post.
Nila Aye (Illustrator)
After graduating from Central St Martins in 1995, Nila Aye became a firm favourite of the London illustration scente. She describes her artwork as 'retro modern with a cute twist. Stylish and sweet at the same time'. Nila has established a loyal client base over the years and loves working on a range of projects.
<p>Ollie is mixing up a new story in the kitchen and his little sister Susie is eager to help. Ollie wants to make a story about a skateboard, so he throws one into the pot, but Susie thinks a princess story would be much better, so she sneaks in her princess doll when Ollie isn't looking. They end up with a twisting turning tale about a skateboarding princess and a silly pirate who can't swim.<br /><br /><br />As the story brews, the siblings disagree more and more. And with each new "ingredient" they add to the soup, the story takes an unexpected turn. Soon the story soup gets completely out of control and their characters get into danger. Will Ollie and Susie be able to work together to save the day?<br /><br /><br />Story Soup is a fun celebration of the power of imagination and a great introduction to how to create a story. There's even a "story soup" recipe at the end of the book, which guides a child through the story writing process. While also exploring sibling rivalry and forgiveness, this is a fantastic book to show youngsters that you can mix seemingly random items and ideas together and make an awesome, wacky story, just like Ollie and Susie's.</p>

Ollie is mixing up a story in a cauldron. It's his story, and he wants it to be about a skateboard, and nothing else. His sister Susie, asks if she can add something to the story, but Ollie refuses. Annoyed, she throws in a Princess doll anyway, and a pirate, and some ketchup, until the story Ollie wanted to write has taken several unexpected turns. The more Ollie tries to set up his story back on course, the more it takes on a life of its own, as all the elements that are intentionally, or unintentionally, added combine to make something wholly new. He slowly learns the joys of collaboration, of creating things in new ways and venturing outside of your comfort zone, as he and Susie work together to give their story a happy ending. This tale from Abie Longstaff and Nila Aye will not only thrill children as vampire unicorns and rainbow zebras make their way into the it, but it will also give you a few ideas to work on building a creative story using items from around your setting.
