You fly down to the king and queen. They are quite surprised to see you.
“Why is that girl chained to the rocks?” you ask. “Why won’t you help her?”
The king begins to weep and seems unable to speak. The queen must tell their sad story.
“I am Queen Cassiopeia. I angered Poseidon, the god of the sea, when I bragged that my daughter was more beautiful than his sea nymphs. To punish me, Poseidon is sending a sea monster to destroy our kingdom.”
You shake your head. “What does that have to do with the girl?”
The queen continues. Her voice sounds empty and defeated. “She is our daughter, Princess Andromeda. Poseidon said that the only way to save our kingdom is to sacrifice her to the sea monster. She is chained to the rock so the sea monster will take her away and spare our kingdom.”
You don’t understand how they can do this to their own daughter, but you won’t let it happen. “I am going to save Andromeda,” you declare.
A glimmer of hope shines in the king’s eyes, but the queen becomes stern. “You cannot,” she demands. “The sea monster will destroy my kingdom.”
Ignoring her, you leap into the air and fly to the rock where Andromeda is chained. You land next to her.
“Who are you?” she asks. “Why are you here?”
“My name is Perseus. I’m going to save you.” You tug on the chains that are holding Andromeda captive.
“The sea monster...” Her voice is a mix of both fear and hope.
You focus on the old, rusty chains that hold her to the rock. As you tug at them, Andromeda squirms in pain. She’s bound tightly. You can’t hack at the chains with your sword—you might harm her. But you can’t break them with your hands either.
You turn your attention to a large lock near her feet. If only you had asked for the key—but you’re not sure Cassiopeia would have given it to you. She seems set on sacrificing her daughter.
“Please, hurry,” Andromeda pleads.
You hammer at the lock with the bottom of your sword as loud clangs echo across the bay. The lock holds. Your efforts barely dent the rusted metal.
Andromeda gasps. “It’s too late!”
You turn to face the sea. Its waters explode in every direction as monstrous tentacles shoot skyward. There are so many and they are so large that they block out the sun.
You no longer have time to free Andromeda. You must face Poseidon’s sea monster. Should you stay where you are to better protect Andromeda? Or should you fly upward and move into a better attack position? What will you choose to do?

The Interactive Classic Literature series puts a new spin on classic literature for middle-grade readers, ages 9 to 13. In these interactive adventures, readers become the main characters and make choices that affect what happens next. Each book of around 140 pages introduces a timeless work of fiction—such as The Call of the Wild or The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes—and gives readers an opportunity to make about 20 life-or-death decisions. If the correct choices are made, the story’s golden path ultimately leads to a happy ending. The 5.25" x 7.5" books are priced below $10, and their video-game-in-a-book format appeals to boys and girls alike, including reluctant readers.
