LIBRARY JOURNAL -- Kyle Barnes is a pariah, living in
squalor after becoming estranged from his wife and child following an act of
shocking violence years before. Convinced that madness and despair follow him
wherever he goes, Kyle is given a chance at a new start-and possibly some
answers to his own past-when a small-town pastor convinces him that all his
troubles are owing to the existence of demonic forces eager to possess and
subvert humanity and that Kyle just might have a larger destiny in a cosmic
battle between good and evil. Discovering the demons is only the beginning, as
Kyle soon finds out that some evil doesn't just resist exorcism, it goes on the
offensive. The work is cocreated by writer Kirkman (<i>The Walking Dead</i>) and
illustrator Azaceta (<i>B.P.R.D.</i>), with colorist Breitweiser (<i>Kill or Be
Killed</i>), whose skills at conveying small moments of human drama make the
bloodier bits all the more astounding.<br />Verdict
This initial volume is mostly concerned with setting the stage for the larger
tale, but horror fans aware of Kirkman's pedigree should eat it up
nonetheless.-Tom Batten, Grafton, VA<br /><br /><br />
