A volume celebrating the work of the twentieth century's leading geographer should in itself be an event of importance for the discipline. This book lives up to that ambition, for in its quality, breadth and originality it reflects the attributes of the man it honors. Peter Haggett's contribution to geography, in a career which has spanned more than 30 years, has been to retain a notion of the discipline as a whole with its own outlook and methods. This book examines his role in the development of such areas as geographical methodology, locational analysis, medical geography, studies of the Pacific Basin, and geography in higher education, which together reflect his unique overview and ability to further a varied but unified view of geography throughout his work. The essays offer an illuminating multiplicity of approaches, subject matter, and informing preconceptions, yet all in their different ways touch upon and celebrate themes in the life of Peter Haggett himself. Essays in this volume will be welcomed not only to those already familiar with Peter Haggett's work itself, but also those interested in the future of the discipline as a whole.
