inhibitions and feel pleasure. Here, Freud considers: the joke (or
“wit”) as a defense mechanism; dirty jokes; ethnic humor; the joke
as a way to express suppressed thoughts and feelings; and the
interplay between the id, ego, and superego in generating humor.
