Deng Xiaoping has been one of the late-twentieth century's preeminent statesmen. His impact will be felt well into the next century as China's economic reforms begin to have impressive effects, and China's international power grows. The life of Deng Xiaoping mirrors the history of China in the twentieth century - beginning with a rural upbringing, then militant revolutionary activities until the CCP seized power in 1949. By 1954 Deng was one of the inner circle of CCP leaders and although he endured six years of internal exile during the Cultural Revolution, by 1977 he had contended for ultimate political power in China. His actions since then have been devoted to deconstructing the Maoist state, introducing economic reforms while keeping a firm hold on the party-state political system, and building China's international and military stature. This volume analyses the effects of Deng Xiaoping's leadership on China, dealing with his role generally in foreign policy, in politics, in the economic system, in social reforms and in his relations with the military. It will be invaluable to students and readers requiring an evaluation of Deng that is both comprehensive and authoritative.

This short book illuminates the character and career of the man who turned China away from erratic and ineffective Maoism to a more promising and fruitful blend of market socialism.
`This short book illuminates the character and career of the man who turned China away from erratic and ineffective Maoism to a more promising and fruitful blend of market socialism.' China Review `Claims to be both comprehensive and authoritative, and, given the reputations of the contributors, this is not an idle claim ... of far more use to the student than any existing biographical study. And it seems well qualified for its chosen role as the work of first resort for those interested in Deng and his contribution to the post-Mao transformation of China in particular.' Times Higher Education Supplement `These papers will provide readers interested in Chinese politics with a useful overview of a genuinely inscrutable political leader.' Journal of Peace Research `By offering "careful, comprehensive analysis and reasoned judgements" of Deng Xiaoping this volume has set high standards for future studies. It is almost certain that more research on Deng will be conducted in the time to come.' American Political Science Review `The volume is well put together, and the individual essays are all strong ... is a useful book for both specialists and classroom use ... a useful, provocative ... readable volume interpreting Deng Xiaoping's career ... short of major new biogaphical information and the opening of Party archives, this book is a good place to start in trying to assess the career of this enigmatic man.'
