Karen Downing is Foundation and Grants Librarian at Hatcher Graduate Library, University of Michigan. She is an active researcher, presenter, and writer on topics relating to race and interracial issues.Darlene Nichols is Psychology Librarian and Coordinator of Instruction at Hatcher Graduate Library, University of Michigan. She brings 16 years of reference work as a researcher looking for information for personal and family use to this project. Kelly Webster is Associate Librarian, Hatcher Graduate Library, University of Michigan and brings extensive knowledge of the organization and classification of multicultural resources.

This annotated bibliography fills a gap in reference resources...This book does a fine job of fostering awareness of the diversity of resources available: scholarly research and personal accounts, juvenile and adult fiction, a chapter on TV and film, and even a chapter on teaching methods....The chapter on interracial homosexuality is perhaps the most provocative in an already contentious subject area....This book will be most useful for social workers, literature students, and social scientists. Recommended.

The annotated listings are thematically grouped into chapters on “hot button” issues, core historical literature, politics, dating and marriage, families, adoption, books for children and young adults, identity development, race and queer sexuality, and American motion pictures. The text also includes general information on teaching an interracial issues course, a sample full syllabus and reading list of a course on interracial issues taught by a sociology professor at the U. of Michigan, library research aids, and a glossary of terms.

Multiracial America addresses a growing interest in interracial people and relationships in America. Over the past decade, there have been numerous books and articles written on interracial issues. Despite the rampant growth in publishing, locating these often-scattered and inaccessible materials remains a challenge. This resource guide provides easy access to the available literature. Topical chapters on the most often researched themes are included, such as core historical literature, books for children and young adults, hot-button issues (passing, identification, appearance, fitting in, and blood quantification), interracial dating and marriage, families, adoption, and issues pertaining to race and queer sexuality. Each chapter includes a brief discussion of the literature on the topic, including historical context and comments on the breadth and depth of the available literature, and followed by annotations of books, popular and scholarly journals, magazines, and newspaper articles, videos/films, and websites. Other useful sections include a chapter on the depiction of interracial relationships in film, teaching an interracial issues course, and how to search for materials given changing terminology and classification issues. Indexes by race and non-print media are included.
