'a major contribution to the increasingly popular field of professionalisation history ... German professional bodies seem on the whole to have grown more hesitantly than their western counterparts ... Though the history of professions does not make for easy reading, it is the strength of this book of essays that it goes a long way towards explaining this paradox.'
R.J. Overy, King's College, London, Business History, Vol. 34, No. 2, Jan '92

'those contributions which distil the essence of comprehensive and significant studies of the technical-scientific functional élites which expanded under the impact of industrialization are extremely worthwhile'
Rüdiger vom Bruch, Humboldt University of Berlin, German Historical Institute London Bulletin, Volume XV, No. 3, November 1993

This work provides comprehensive coverage of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Germany from the point of view of the history of professions. Sixteen historians from the United States, West Germany, and Great Britain examine professions ranging from law, medicine, and education to engineering, social work, and psychology as well as the special cases of the civil service and the military. They examine such questions as the role of the Prussian state in the creation and regulation of professions, the experience of women, the social and political role of the various professional groups during the turbulent Weimar and Nazi periods, and the remarkable institutional continuity of certain professions through the Third Reich and into the postwar era.
