The Trials of Love, two plays, classics of French dramatic literature, which in these translations were British premieres. The plays had not been performed in English for over 300 years, not until Cheek by Jowl were bold enough to commission them. Both plays are about the agonising tangles brought about by love: The first, Andromache, is by Racine who is a master at depicting the kind of love that can flip over into the opposite, hate, when not requited. In the second, The Cid, by Corneille, the problem here is when love and parental duty conflict.

Biographical note

After a degree in Drama, English and Modern Languages at Bristol University, David Bryer worked at the National Theatre. He then went into teaching, emerging later with a commission from Cheek by Jowl Theatre Company for a verse translation of Racine’s Andromaque and later of Corneille’s Le Cid. This led to a dual career of teaching and literary translation. He has been a Language Tutor at Sussex University since 1991.
