[Zheng] is one of the best-known roots-seeking writers in China and deserves to be more fully introduced to the English-speaking world. In that sense, Strange Tales from Strange Lands is a most welcome event.

A powerful depiction of the tensions generated by conflicts of sexuality and ethnicity in contemporary China. These tensions evolved partly from the sense of estrangement from Chinese culture felt by many in the post-Mao era. As a means to understanding this crisis, some of the best writers in the 1980s sought the "roots" of Chinese civilization, often in "strange lands" inhabited by minority tribes.

Biographical note

Professor Kam Louie is currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong. Before joining HKU, he was Chair Professor of Chinese Studies at Queensland University and Australian National University. He has also taught at Nanjing, Murdoch and Auckland Universities. He is a Fellow of the Australian Humanities Academy and was chief editor of Asian Studies Review for nine years as well as editorial board member of several scholarly journals.
