Biographical note
Internationally acclaimed hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith was an honorary vice-president of the Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, a Fellow of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada, and a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE 'for services to hymnody', and in 2009 an honorary Doctor of Divinity (DD) from the University of Durham. He died in 2024.
Inevitably, most hymn books can only include a limited number of hymn choices for the occasional services - baptism, confirmation, marriage, funerals, ordination, services for healing and wholeness. "Draw Near to God" extends the choices available with contemporary hymns mostly set to well known tunes. Included is a wedding hymn based on "1 Corinthians 13" - one of the most popular readings at weddings - to a tune that is easy to sing.
