In 2005, the fjord landscape around the Nærøyfjord was inscribed on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List of the world's most unique natural and cultural monument sites worthy of preservation. Every year some 300 000 thousand tourists visit this narrow fjord surrounded by dramatic mountains and cascading waterfalls. To this unique landscape Johs. B. Thue has invited us on a journey - in the past and in the present, summer and winter. The writer gives his account of how the fjord landscape was formed, how the fjord has functioned as a communication artery, and how people have eked out a living here. We get acquainted with Viking and goat farmer, poet and fiddler. In addition, he lets us get a taste of local culinary specialities such as goat cheese and smoked salmon.
