"This is a very special story about not a just a place, but a journey into portals. I found immense pleasure in exploring Marianne's worlds in this book. I often saw myself as Katya in the midst of her insecurities and overcoming. I loved how the secrets were revealed in this intriguing adventure that brings themes of friendship, betrayal, victories and losses. The reading was very enjoyable and I I strongly recommend it."

"This book follows Katja Belmon, a recruit in the army that has magic. The magic comes from tattoos in the temples and come in different shapes and colors depending on the power. The book was very action filled with a high tempo. Lots of twists and turns. When I tell you that my heart raced from start to finish, I am not kidding! And no one is safe in Mariannes books, I can tell you that! The worldbuilding is unique and amazing! Every bit is explained with little paragraphs in the corner. The chapters are short. The magic system is world class and I wish I had that magic! 5/5⭐️ If you like YA dark/portal fantasy with a little bit of fade to black spice, portal magic, unique worldbuilding, tattoo magic, enemies/rivals to lovers, twists and turns, then these books are for you."

"From the first chapter, I knew this was going to be a fun read. First chapters are tricky, especially when you're not just introduced to new characters, but also a world different from our own that has an original magic system. Marianne Nelvik did this beautifully: the world building details were subtle yet immersive, the characters sprang to life and there was an immediate sense of a mysterious danger that kept the pages turning and turning. The pace of this story is FAST! Twists and turns await at every corner and the stakes are nice and high to the very end. Definitely a book I could have read in one or two sittings if I had had the time, but unfortunately, this week was not that week. There's a lot of portal magic to be found here - if you hadn't guessed from the beautiful cover art - for those that enjoy it. Dark magic (my favourite) is also well-represented and I loved how the tempting nature of it was portrayed. The author manages to remain in full control of a story that at times runs the risk of becoming confusing or convoluted, as there is so much going on. Well-timed breaks from the action scenes are given in the form of witty banter or cozy scenes being set. This story is full of dangerous creatures you've never met before, heart wrenching choices and a rivals-to-lovers romance that is to die for. The main characters Katya and Valour are excellently fleshed out. Katya shows a courageous and caring spirit, while also having judgemental and self-serving thoughts occasionally - like we all do. Both she and Valour are shaped by their past and act not always in the way I would want them to, but rather in the way I would expect them to based on their personalities, which is so satisfying. This reminded me a lot of the Dutch fantasy books I read in my teens and made me feel so nostalgic. Now comes the hard part: waiting for the next part to be translated into English, so I can know how the story continues!"

"I am an avid fantasy reader; when I tell you this is amazing, you better believe me! READ IF YOU LIKE: ✨ morally grey FMC ✨ rivals to lovers ✨ found family ✨ dark magic ✨ YA fantasy ✨ unique worldbuilding This book has one of the most unique worldbuildings I’ve ever read. Since this is a portal fantasy we visit a lot of different worlds and Marianne describes them all perfectly. Katya faces a lot of gruesome creatures which is described with the tiniest details making it easy to picture them in your head while reading. The story captures you from the first pages as Katya is dragged into a dangerous mission. And the excitement doesn’t end there. The book has a lot of twists and turns that keep you locked in through it all! One of the things I like the most about this book is the darkness. Marianne shows all the dark sides of the story and doesn't hide the ugly sides. And this also includes Katya. Of course, every hero is good through and through, right?"

"The Emperor is the first book in the Soroda’s Might series and also the author’s debut novel. It was originally written in Norwegian but has now been translated to English and I’ve read the English version. The genre is young adult fantasy, and portal fantasy. Katya Belmon does not see her role as a recruit in the army as glamorous, or herself of more importance than other humans. She does not consider herself brave or soldier like. Yet, for exactly those reasons, she is sent on a mission to retrieve a secret spell document that will finally allow them to defeat their greatest enemy. The story is fast paced and the fantasy world unique. The characters are well-developed, and I especially enjoyed Valour as a character. He had that mystery to him that made me ache to learn more about him. Katya is also an interesting character, and her internal struggle is well written. She goes from wanting nothing to do with the current conflict to finding herself in the middle of it. The magic system is captivating and new. I did find it a bit difficult to understand all of it towards the end and during the final battle. In terms of the writing style, there were some parts where it didn’t flow as well as I would have liked. The concept and the worlds themselves were so unique that I would have loved to see a bit more worldbuilding to get a deeper understanding. The descriptions of the “underworld” was amazing to read! Such an interesting take that I couldn’t stop reading. This is a great book for readers of YA who are interested in portal fantasy, rivals to lovers, dark magic and unique worldbuilding."
