Zanele Sidzumo Baqwa was born I South Africa in 1945. A talented scholar, she decided at the age of eight that she wanted to become a doctor so that she could be of service to her people - the majority black population who were under the yoke of the oppressive apartheid regime that she grew up under. She witnessed close friends leaving the country to join anti-apartheid liberation organizations. After high school, Zanele decided to leave too, becoming a fence hopper into Botswana. After making contact with the African National Congress, she eventually arrived in Dar es Salaam, from where she was offered a scholarship for South African refugees to study medicine at the University of Oslo.
